The AI-Powered Influence Operations Kill Chain

Red Teaming Objectives in the Information Domain

Your red team engagements must move beyond simple phishing. You need to simulate a persistent, adaptive adversary who manipulates the very perception of reality for your client’s employees or customers.

Objective 1: Test Algorithmic and Human Detection

The first line of defense is detection. Can the target’s systems and people spot the fakes? You must test both. Your campaign should include a mix of content, from crude, easily detectable bots to highly sophisticated AI agents whose behavior mimics humans almost perfectly. The goal is to find the breaking point of their detection capabilities.

Objective 2: Measure Cognitive Resilience

Detection is not enough. What happens when a piece of disinformation gets through? The real test is resilience. How quickly does the organization’s leadership identify the narrative? How do they respond? Do they amplify it by mistake? Your red team scenario might involve seeding a subtle but damaging rumor on an internal messaging platform and tracking its spread and the official response, measuring time-to-detection and time-to-correction.

Objective 3: Exploit Algorithmic Amplification

Sophisticated adversaries don’t just create content; they manipulate the platforms that host it. Social media and news aggregator algorithms are designed to promote engaging content. Your red team should design content that is deliberately polarizing or emotionally charged to “hijack” these recommendation systems. The objective is to see if you can make the platform’s own AI an unwitting accomplice in spreading your narrative, forcing the blue team to fight not just your bots, but the platform itself.

The Defender’s Asymmetry Problem

AI dramatically worsens the defender’s dilemma in the information space. The adversary can generate content at near-zero marginal cost, creating an infinite attack surface. They can run thousands of A/B tests per hour to find the most effective narrative. The defender, meanwhile, must analyze every piece of content, a computationally expensive and slow process. As a red teamer, your role is to demonstrate this asymmetry in a controlled environment, highlighting the futility of purely reactive, manual defenses and pushing the organization towards automated, AI-driven countermeasures and a stronger focus on human resilience.
